Browser extensions can enhance browsing but may cause errors or instability. Temporarily disabling them is a quick troubleshooting step. Here's how to do it and why you should do it.
Improve browser performance: Some extensions consume significant CPU, memory, or network resources.
Troubleshoot website issues: Extensions may interfere with how websites load and function.
Enhance privacy and security: Certain extensions can pose privacy risks or become less trustworthy over time.
Check for extension conflicts: Multiple extensions, especially those that modify web content, can conflict and cause unexpected problems.
Common Signs You Should Disable Extensions
Unusually slow browsing speeds
Websites failing to load or function
Frequent browser freezes and crashes
Sudden pop-ups, redirects, or search engine changes

What if the Extension Can’t be Disabled?
If an extension is “Managed by your organization” (common on work/school devices), you won’t be able to turn it off. You’ll need to contact your IT admin. Malware may also block removal, so run a browser cleanup tool or a trusted antivirus scan. On mobile browsers, extension support is limited (e.g., Firefox for Android supports some; Safari iOS has content blockers managed in Settings > Safari > Extensions).
Disabling is ideal for temporary fixes, like troubleshooting a broken webpage or running a secure exam. It stops the extension from running while saving your settings. Removing an extension is a better choice if you no longer use it, or suspect it contains malware or breaches your privacy.

Re-enabling extensions is as easy as disabling them. Just open your browser’s Extensions or Add-ons page, locate the disabled extension, and toggle it back on—your previous settings will usually be restored automatically. If you deleted the extension, simply reinstall it from the official store and log in again if needed.
